LOWTHERM

Additives for Warm-Mix Asphalt

Next-generation surfactants that are biodegradable, odorless, and safe for humans and for the environment.

The addition of a very small amount of LOWTHERM allows the production of bituminous mixtures at temperatures 40-50°C lower than those traditionally used, without reducing pavement performance and durability.

Advantages & Benefits

Significantly increase workability of the mixture, enabling reduced production and laying temperatures.

Allow extended transport times for hot mixes or paving operations in extremely cold weather conditions

Enable higher percentages of reclaimed asphalt (RA) in the mix, maintaining workability without overheating virgin aggregates.

Ensure proper bitumen adhesion to any type of aggregate, whether siliceous or calcareous, increasing resistance to stripping and improving pavement durability by preventing surface raveling, pothole formation, and cracking.

Improve the environmental performance of bituminous mix production by reducing CO₂ emissions and energy consumption.

Instructions for Use

These are liquid additives with a viscosity that ensures pumpability even at low temperatures. Depending on production requirements, the additive can be introduced directly into the plant mixer or into the bitumen storage tank. They are stable at high temperatures, and their performance remains unchanged even after several weeks of storage in hot bitumen at 180°C.

Dosage Guidelines

For LOWTHERM 4G, LOWTHERM HT and LOWTHERM AP, a dosage between 0,3% and 0,5% by weight of the bitumen is recommended. These quantities do not modify the rheology or physical properties of the bitumen but significantly improve mix workability, allowing a temperature reduction of 30-50°C compared to traditionally adopted values, even in the presence of high reclaimed asphalt (RA) percentages.

The LOWTHERM ACF additive provides additional functionality by also performing a rejuvenating action. It modifies the rheological properties of the aged binder contained in the RA, enabling the production of mixtures with performance equal to or higher than those obtained using only virgin bitumen. The recommended dosage ranges between 0,1% and 0,3% by weight of the RA introduced into the mix and depends on the quantity and quality of the binder it contains, the penetration grade of the virgin bitumen used, and the production and laying temperatures.

Innovation

Additives with a special chemical structure made up of long, high molecular weight chains. Once incorporated into bituminous mixtures, they position themselves at the bitumen/aggregate interface and, through physico-chemical actions:

  1. Reduce surface tension, thereby improving adhesion and resistance to stripping;

  2. Reduce internal friction forces within the mixture, significantly increasing workability to the extent that production and laying temperatures can be lowered.
